One of nature’s greatest spectacles is the fall foliage season in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. This year, the Farmer’s Almanac, which has kept tabs on the autumn colors since 1818, predicts that peak season in New Hampshire mountains will occur from September 28 to October 9. That happily coincides with AccuWeather’s prediction that the best time to see fall foliage in Northern New England will be in late September and early October.

That amazing blaze of oranges, reds, and yellows is best enjoyed from a comfortable base like The Glen House, the award-winning 68-room hotel at the foot of Mt. Washington.
Surrounded by the 800,000-acre White Mountain National Forest, The Glen House is at its most dramatic in the fall, the ideal season for exploring the wilderness surrounding the hotel.
The Glen House partners with The Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center, which lies across the road from the hotel. This is Northern New England’s full-service adventure center, with rentals, a gear shop, and more than 28 miles of trails waiting to be explored.
Great Glen offers guided hiking, bike rentals, and half-day wildlife kayak tours that provide an opportunity to spot bald eagles, osprey, kingfishers, and even moose and black bears while paddling flat water on the nearby Androscoggin River.

The hotel’s saltwater pool is the perfect place to soothe tired muscles after a day spent outdoors. Late afternoon is when to gather around the fire pit on the outdoor patio at the hotel, an opportunity to sample a local brew like Moat Mountain Brewery’s Greens Grant IPA or The Auto Road Ale from Tuckerman Brewing Company while enjoying panoramic views of Mt. Washington. The bar, which was named “The Most Beautiful Bar in New Hampshire” by Architectural Digest, offers a wall of windows with those same striking mountain views. When hunger calls, The Notch Grille serves comfort food favorites.
