One of the most dynamic museum complexes ever to be built in Switzerland is under construction in Lausanne, the artistic hub of the Canton of Vaud. Called PLATEFORME 10, it is located adjacent to the Lausanne train station, in the very heart of the city. PLATEFORME 10 will constitute a new “arts district” for the city and bring together, in a single location, three museums that currently inhabit disparate buildings throughout the city:

  • Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts (Cantonal Fine Arts Museum)
  • Musée de l’Elysée (Cantonal Museum of Photography)
  • MUDAC (Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts)

PLATEFORME 10, which is being constructed on the site of former locomotive sheds in Lausanne, will merge fine art, photography, design, and textile arts on one 237,000 square foot campus, providing each museum with more exhibition space than they currently have.

The Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts is being designed by Italian architect Fabrizio Barozzi and Spanish architect Alberto Veiga. It will also house the Toms Pauli Foundation (a museum of ancient tapestries and modern textiles) and the Félix Vallotton Foundation (dedicated to the Lausanne-born artist). It will open on October 5, 2019.

The building that will contain the Musée de l’Elysée and MUDAC has been designed by Portuguese architects Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus and will open at the end of 2021.

The architects have also designed the extensive public space around each building, since PLATEFORME 10 will provide a welcoming, open environment that will offer ongoing programs and events in the heart of Lausanne. It promises to become an alfresco living room with restaurants, relaxation areas, boutiques and bookshops, as well as a library/documentation center, providing places to meet, eat and relax. There will also be art residencies that contribute to Plateforme10’s creative dynamic.

Funding for PLATEFORME 10 is being provided by the city of Lausanne and SBB (Swiss railways), and a variety of foundations, companies and individuals.
